Ethanosolv with NaOH Pretreatment of Moso Bamboo for Efficient Enzymatic Saccharification

چکیده
Bamboo is a potential lignocellulosic biomass for the production of bioethanol because of its high cellulose and hemicellulose contents. An acid-free ethanosolv process was proposed to overcome the problems caused by the acid catalysts commonly used in organosolv processes. In this research, ethanosolv pretreatment catalyzed by NaOH was used to enhance the enzymatic saccharification of moso bamboo. The addition of 10% (w/w on bamboo) NaOH in 75% (v/v) ethanol was demonstrated to be effective in the pretreatment and fractionation of bamboo. The pretreatment yielded a solid fraction with 60.1% cellulose. The celluloseto-glucose conversion yield was 28.9% to 45.1%, depending on pretreatment conditions, after enzymatic hydrolysis of the solid fraction at 50 °C for 48 h using enzyme loading (15 filter paper units of cellulase/g cellulose and 30 IU -glucosidase/g cellulose). The concentrations of fermentation inhibitors such as 5-hydroxy-2-methyl furfural (HMF) and furfural were negligible in the spent liquor after the ethanosolv pretreatment and were much lower than those in the spent liquor from H2SO4-water or ethanosolv only treatment.

Bioconversion of Bamboo to Bioethanol Using the Two-stage Organosolv and Alkali Pretreatment
Bamboo’s ability to grow on nutrient-poor soils, with little requirement of silvicultural management, easy harvesting characteristics, vegetative propagation, fast growth, and a host of other desirable characteristics, make it a good candidate as an energy crop. Energy crops are cultivated solely for use as sources of energy through their conversion into alcohols. This study set out to determin...

The response and behavior of bamboo green, timber, and yellow of moso bamboo (Phyllostachys heterocycla) to three pretreatments, sulfite (SPORL), dilute acid (DA), and alkali (NaOH), were investigated and compared with varied chemical loadings at 180°C for 30 min with a 6.25:1 (v/w) liquor-to-bamboo ratio. All the pretreatments improved the enzymatic digestibility of bamboo substrates. Under th...

متن کاملEffects of Green Liquor Pretreatment on the Chemical Composition and Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Several Lignocellulosic Biomasses
Pretreatment of biomass is an extremely important step in a commercial biorefinery. For realization of lignocellulosic biomass as an alternative fuel source to occur, a fundamental understanding and critical investigation of the chosen pretreatment are essential. In this work, green liquor (GL) pretreatment of four plant species, namely Masson pine, poplar, moso bamboo, and miscanthus, was inve...

The modified cellulose solvent- (concentrated phosphoric acid) and organic solvent- (95% ethanol) based lignocellulose fractionation (COSLIF) was applied to a naturally-dry moso bamboo sample. The biomass dissolution conditions were 50 degrees C, 1 atm for 60 min. Glucan digestibility was 88.2% at an ultra-low cellulase loading of one filter paper unit per gram of glucan. The overall glucose an...
